Last December, LinkedIn editors ask their audiences about which Big Idea they believe will define the year ahead. 70% of people voted hybrid working is the one to stay.

Hybrid work is here to stay

As work/life balance became the norm, employees began expecting greater flexibility and looking for jobs that mirrored their beliefs and goals.

More than half of employees, according to LinkedIn’s Economic Graph, favor a hybrid work paradigm. Furthermore, additional polls have consistently revealed that employees favor a mixed work paradigm.

According to the same studies, corporate executives anticipate that hybrid working will become a regular practice in most firms during the next three years.

Another high demand from the workforce is for pay packages that include coverage for the stages of life that have the greatest influence on us. Parental and caregiver leave, as well as more flexible PTO, are top goals.

Retaining Talent in a Hybrid Setting

Hybrid Setting is now the main factor to attract and retain talent.

Besides salary increments, according to the most recent WFH Research statistics, quoted by Bloomberg, most typical office workers appear to favor the ability to work from home at least one day each week.

If their company refuses to provide hybrid working possibilities, people in their twenties are more inclined to start seeking new employment, while those over 50 are more likely to just resign.

Another report made by LinkedIn Glint Wellbeing reveals that employees at remote-friendly organizations were 32% more likely to struggle with work-life balance compared to their peers at other organizations.

Various organizations have different definitions of hybrid working. Varied work locations define it for some, while different work schedules define it for others. In many cases, it’s both.

Whatever model you choose, LinkedIn research reveals that people and businesses in this new context require stronger approaches for maintaining work-life balance.

Developing an internal customer experience plan will keep your hybrid staff engaged and motivated.

As hybrid work has become popular, companies need to make a significant change to their old work environment if they want to attract employees back to the office.  One of the points is to provide flexibility to your meeting room.

LinkedIn suggests the first step is to improve boring meeting rooms. So, LinkedIn’s new flagship building in Mountain View, Calif. meeting rooms feature comfortable furniture and cutting-edge technology, and it was created by the architectural firm NBBJ, to make their office more flexible.

What you should know

  • The first requirement to improve the meeting room atmosphere is to meet the needs of your staff;
  • Flexibility is very important for newly designed meeting rooms;

New design for LinkedIn’s meeting rooms

LinkedIn believes that bringing flexibility into the meeting space will make people’s work more enjoyable. If they are happier at work, the boring atmosphere would naturally go away. Therefore, compared with traditional meeting rooms, the newly designed meeting rooms with a greater focus on employees’ needs and well-being.

The new conference rooms feature movable partitions to expand or reduce meeting space at any time and provide additional sterilization equipment to protect the health of employees.

LinkedIn added open conference spaces amid the desks of engineers on the same teams. If they want to have a discussion with others, workers can pop into one of these spaces and close the sliding doors — or leave them open. Also, providing some soundproof equipment in these areas ensures workers can focus on work.

Some conference room management systems can provide a very flexible free room combination function. Colleagues can change the size and equipment of the conference room according to the needs of the meeting, so as to add more vitality to the work.

“The intention is for it (newly designed meeting room) to be hyperflexible…Acoustical baffling on the ceiling dampens sound, and its zigzag shape adds more dynamism to the room, enlivening what is normally a flat, static plane,” said Robert Norwood, a principal at NBBJ.

Relax atmosphere encourages employees to speak more

LinkedIn uses a modernist oak table from Anthropologie to replace a central table in conference spaces that look more like lounges.  Also, each has a squishy sofa with throw pillows, and plants and books abound.

“The relaxed look is intended to help meeting participants feel comfortable and encourage members of the staff “who might not speak up in a traditional setting,” Lisa Britz, LinkedIn’s director of workplace design said.

Virtual meeting tools add interest to meetings

Adding virtual tools to the meeting room can connect remote workers to work together with office-fully workers and provide more energy in meetings. There have some large horizontal screens in meeting rooms on LinkedIn, allowing for sharing documents on one side and showing the faces of remote colleagues on the other.

Additionally, some companies’ conference rooms are also equipped with a digital whiteboard and a special camera mounted on an opposite wall that “ghosts out” the person writing so colleagues working at home can see what’s being written in real-time. It makes the meetings or presentations look funnier.

The real estate services firm, CBRE has conducted a survey of companies occupying office space recently. It found that 76 percent of respondents considered enhanced videoconferencing one of the top priorities in their return to the office.

Need an office management system to control flexible equipment

As mentioned above, providing flexible working equipment in the meeting room can improve the condition of work in the meeting. However, you need to be aware that to manage these devices you need a well-developed office management system.

A well-developed office management system allows you to reserve the required meeting room and ensure that your meeting is not disturbed while it is in progress.

For LinkedIn, the goal is clear: Make hybrid work more viable and sustainable.

According to Gallup, more than half of people who can work remotely expect or prefer to do so at least part of the time from now on.

LinkedIn’s 250,000-square-foot global headquarters, called B1, was designed on the existing 29-acre campus in Silicon Valley for hybrid working.

Social Work Matters

Diverse functions and preferences should be accommodated in the office. That might be a place where working parents can focus on their work without being disturbed by household duties and responsibilities.

For many Gen Z workers, going back to work is a pleasant chance to find the spaces for in-person mentoring, learning opportunities, and growth that they mostly missed during the pandemic.

The majority of employees are seeking opportunities to create (or rebuild) the social capital that has deteriorated during the previous two years.

It’s what Stanford economist Nick Bloom calls social work, and it includes training, mentoring, and collaborative thinking that all companies try to center as the selling point of being in the office.

Make the workplace efficient for all work types

Due to this, the new headquarters of LinkedIn have rooms that may be used for rest, attention, collaboration, learning, and socialization.

During the lockout, they discovered that when employees have more personal autonomy, productivity increases. People need to be able to establish personalized routines and rhythms in the workplace that seem right to them. This also applies to working from home when it deems appropriate.

One of the most significant changes LinkedIn made to the pre-pandemic headquarters design was to replace the traditional workstations, which made up about 40% of the space, with a number of seating areas, each of which served as a distinct “neighborhood” for a different team and was arranged to accommodate their typical activities.

Additionally, the entire structure is vertically designed to correspond to a gradient of work styles, with the most social on the ground floor and the most heads-down at the top.

Improve diversity in the workplace

An increasingly complex and diverse workforce, including people with physical and cognitive disabilities, requires that workplace culture in general, and office design, in particular, reflect this.

Therefore, all decisions made by LinkedIn for the new headquarters were guided by inclusive design principles.

LinkedIn evaluated everything from ramps to light and glare, stimulation level to acoustics, and degree of privacy to furniture that would allow 60 different postures, taking into account conditions like paralysis, visual or auditory impairment, neurodivergence, anxiety, and more.

Based on LinkedIn, when they inaugurated our new HQ, 63% of staff who were formally assigned to other buildings have come to B1, taking advantage of the range of work zones, amenities, and configurations the space offers. Employees are still able to work from home or on campus.
