Are Indonesian companies ready for hybrid working now?

In Indonesia, as in any other emerging economy, many organizations were getting ready to start their digital transformation journey.

The Cisco Global Hybrid Work Study 2022 indicates that 83.5 % of employees in Indonesia prefer to work in hybrid mode. However, there are still many of them that are not ready to make the shift.  

According to Policy Discourse On Work From Anywhere” (WFA) for Indonesia’s State Civil Apparatus (ASN) shows that the main reasons are the conservative mindsets of leaders, geographical challenges, and public skepticism. 

Reasons for Indonesia still can’t implement their hybrid working 

Conservative mindsets of ASN leaders

Since many ASN leaders have conservative mindsets, they still adhere to the conventional system, which requires all of their subordinates to be physically present at the office, it is difficult to implement hybrid working in their companies. 

Geographical challenges

As many areas in Indonesia still are underdeveloped, remote, and frontier, so the technology of network connection and equipment in these places is still to be developed.

Also, the United Nations (UN) e-Government Survey 2020 ranked Indonesia 88th in the development and implementation of the e-Government System/Sistem Pemerintahan Berbasis Elektronik (“SPBE”)

Hence, implementing e-government or remote work in these areas will be not easy for now. 

Public skepticism

In Indonesia, people misunderstand hybrid working, so there is a perception among the community that the performance of ASN will become less productive and will eventually hinder public services if the WFA arrangement is put in place.   

What should the Indonesia government and companies prepare for hybrid working 

While there are some conservative ideas or packages that make the implementation of hybridization in Indonesia very difficult, the Indonesian government and companies can follow some solutions to implement hybrid work soon. 

Reference to Brazil’s hybrid work experience

According to the WFA, Indonesia lacks the appropriate infrastructure and experience for remote work, therefore the experience of Brazil can be taken as a reference. The reason is Brazil already has some experience in managing the wealth and administration of hybrid work. 

Expedite the enactment of legislation conducive to implementing hybrid work

Since Indonesian talents are eager to work flexibly (83.5%), but the Indonesian government has no legislation to encourage companies to implement hybrid working, thus the companies are not prepared for hybrid working and could be facing the loss of talent at any time.

Legislation to encourage implementing hybrid work will prevent the loss of Indonesian talent abroad. 

Improve the problem of inadequate technology
